How do you cover laminate cabinets?

A plastic laminate kitchen design cabinet is a popular choice because it is durable, easy to clean, stain resistant, and available in a range of colors, patterns, and textures. It’s also more economical than wood kitchen cabinets. Do you have a laminate kitchen cabinet you’d like to update or replace?

First, you can restore the finish to your laminate kitchen cabinets. This is the easiest option and can be all you need to restore the shine and make them look new again. Cabinet Restorer works exceptionally well on laminate cabinets, and it helps prevent wear. Restores and protects laminate kitchen cabinets in one easy application.

You can replace them, which is of course your most costly option; cabinets typically represent about three-quarters of the cost of a new modular kitchen. Naturally, stock cabinets are less expensive than custom. You can replace the doors only, with real wood or with glass; glass doors can give your kitchen a whole new look.

There’s also a material called premium rigid thermal foil (RTF), which is a type of laminate. A vinyl film applied to the surface with heat and pressure, it’s available in a large variety of colors and patterns, including woodgrains, granite looks, and metallics.

You can reface or resurface the doors only, or the doors and face frames, with wood. Price depends on materials, door style, and construction (flush, partial overlay, or complete overlay), and whether you hire someone for the project or do it yourself.

Finally, although you cannot stain laminate, you can paint it. This is the least expensive option. Proper prepping is critical; sand the cabinets first so the new paint will adhere, then apply primer before your topcoat. You can use either oil-based or latex paint; use the corresponding primer for your choice of paint.

Whichever option you choose, your kitchen will look almost like new when you’ve finished your laminate kitchen cabinet project.
