Our big, old, house has lots of character and potential but it also needs considerable renovations. One of the biggest projects that we are faced with tackling is our kitchen. I have lots of fantastic ideas. We very nearly drool when browsing through catalogs and while venturing through the aisles of our local home improvement center. However, typical kitchen remodeling costs are quite simply beyond our reach and we'd had to resort to modifications in our design plans and project scope in order to make this job more realistic.
In our community, there is an organization called Habitat for Humanity. They have a store called Restore that gathers new and used building supplies from manufacturers and construction sites throughout the city. These items are then made available for sale to member of the public at the store.
We have availed ourselves of all sorts of fantastic finds. Made it a practice to visit the store on an almost weekly basis, to keep abreast of what's in stock and what we can make use of.
To minimize our kitchen remodeling costs, he has cleared a space in our basement and uses this area to collect together items he has purchased (at a fraction of their original cost) at the Restore. So far, he has acquired beautiful slate floor tiles, crown molding, and uniquely curved kitchen drawer fronts. He has collected beautiful brushed metal handles and knobs for a dollar a piece that will complement the decor of the modular kitchen. He also got enough brand new, natural wood kitchen cabinet doors to equip our kitchen with plenty of cupboard space.
The Restore also acquires kitchen appliances from time-to-time. We already have a newer dishwasher, however our kitchen and stove will need to be replaced in order to complete our kitchen remodeling. The perfect set, as he makes his weekly rounds. We are also open to purchasing appliances that are a couple of years old, and we keep watch in our community newspapers and online forums to find the perfect set.
This may be a slower route to getting a beautiful kitchen, but we simply cannot afford to spend well in kitchen remodeling costs. A simply functional kitchen in the meantime, because in the end I know that we will be thrilled with the beauty of your new kitchen, and we'll have saved a ton of money as well.
Kitchens are one of the most heavily used areas in the home, which is why kitchen remodeling is a popular project. The size of the kitchen and the extent of the renovation are the greatest factors when considering the how much the kitchen remodeling costs will be. If the cabinets are in good shape then restaining, painting, or refacing may be options that are less expensive than replacing the cabinets entirely. Refacing cabinet doors and hardware can add a whole new look to the kitchen without the mess, stress, and expense of replacement, as can painting, staining, or stenciling. You can spend just as much or as little as you want on kitchen remodeling costs, it just depends on what you want to do.
The cost of kitchen remodeling doesn’t have to break the bank, and by saving on one aspect like the cabinets, allows more money to be spent on something else, such as upgrading the counter tops. Kitchen remodeling costs can include not only the cabinets and the counter tops, but the floors, wall, and an appliance upgrade too. It can be a partial remodel or a whole new area may be added to the home; the number of remodeling options is countless. Kitchen remodeling costs vary greatly depending on the size of the kitchen, You may think that a small kitchen remodel would cost less than a large one, but this is not necessarily true. For example, a small kitchen with hickory cabinets, granite slab counter tops, and slate or hard wood floors is going to cost considerably more than some larger kitchen remodeling projects. It’s all relative.
Lots of great kitchen remodeling ideas can be found at local do-it-yourself home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s, where you can find books on the subject and store employees who can offer assistance (hopefully!). Doing your kitchen remodel yourself may reduce your overall kitchen remodeling costs, but if you don’t want the headaches, you may just want to hire a company that specializes in kitchen remodels and that warranties their workmanship.
